As the year draws to close I find myself reflecting on what I have accomplished, what I have not gotten around to and what I wish I had done better. I try really hard not to dwell on regrets but find it beneficial and cathartic to dissect my every move in order to understand how I got to where I am and how not, if possible, repeat passed mistakes. Some of you who know me personally have bared witness to this journey of mine for the past 5 or so years when I decided to turn my life completely upside down. As I approached my 40’s I began to admit to myself my unhappiness with the choices I had made in my life. I believe this is known as the “mid-life crisis”. The choices I had made as a younger woman on career and lifestyle I now know were not to fulfill dreams but rather to conform to what I believed others wanted of me.

Ah… the holidays are upon us. Good food, good wine, wonderful family full of good cheer and beautiful gifts all given with thought of what you would love to have. Great picture huh? Oh, if that the holidays would arrive like in the movies. Mom looks great after preparing a meal for 20. Yeah right!

Because you’ve known each other allyour lives, families are well aware how to push each other’s buttons. With the pushing of buttons comes the familiar pattern of the silent treatment, squawking, or even fighting. I’m sure you all know someone who can easily set you off. But I bet you’d rather take the high road and not get sucked into the familiar pattern.

In the 6th Century B.C., the Greeks were toasting to the health of their friend's for a practical reason — to assure them that the wine they were about to drink wasn't poisoned. Spiking the wine with poison had become a common means of disposing of an enemy, silencing the competition, preventing a messy divorce, and the like. It became a symbol of friendship for the host to pour wine from a common pitcher, drink it before his guests, and satisfied that it was a good experience; raise his glass to his friends to do likewise.
